NCSoft has officially revealed Horizon Steel Frontiers, a new MMORPG set in Guerrilla Games’ Horizon universe, and it’s coming to PC and mobile. The game is being developed by NCSoft, in collaboration with Guerrilla and Sony Interactive Entertainment, marking the first time the Horizon world steps into the MMO genre.

Horizon Steel Frontiers takes place in a brand-new region called the Deadlands, a harsh frontier inspired by Arizona and New Mexico. Here, specialized machine hunters roam the open world, taking on machines, rival tribes, and resource fights. NCSoft says the game builds on Horizon’s well-known machine-hunting action, but expands it with MMORPG systems, deep customization, and massive player interaction.

Unlike the main games, you won’t play as Aloy. Instead, you create your own machine hunter, with designs inspired by the tribes and factions from Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West. The studio says customization is one of the biggest pillars of this project.

Although Steel Frontiers will be available on PC, Guerrilla confirms that the game was built specifically for mobile, which means this is not the same live-service Horizon project that’s been rumored for years.

In the reveal video, Jan-Bart Van Beek, Guerrilla’s studio and art director, explains:

“Players take on the role of machine hunters chasing opportunity in the Deadlands. You share the frontier with thousands of other players, sometimes working together, sometimes competing, and those moments of cooperation and tension create experiences you can’t script.”

According to executive producer Sung-Gu Lee, the team wanted to capture one feeling above all: “the thrill of taking down colossal machines.”

Steel Frontiers introduces several new mechanics built for MMO combat. You can break machine parts, climb on damaged points using the pullcaster, set traps, inflict status effects, and even pick up giant weapons knocked off machines to carry into your next fight. Lee says the game focuses heavily on cooperation and strategy, especially during large-scale machine battles.

NCSoft has not shared a release date yet, and we still don’t know if the game will be free-to-play or paid, but Horizon Steel Frontiers will launch on PC and mobile when it’s ready.
